General Information

Designated as Region X of the Philippines, Northern Mindanao is composed of five provinces and two cities classified as highly urbanized, all occupying the north-central part of Mindanao Island, and the island province of Camiguin. The regional center is Cagayan de Oro City, where the national government’s regional offices and other big establishments are located. North Mindanao, from the city of Cagayan de Oro in the west to Siargao Island in the east, is the area most tourists are interested in. It contains some of the area’s great destinations, with a variety of small islands and activities, and accommodation for every budget. Cagayan de Oro isn’t much in itself, but it makes a good starting point for trips to Camiguin, a stunning little volcanic island off Mindanao’s northern coast, and inland through the bucolic province of Bukidnon. Further east is the city of Butuan and, to the south, the beautiful wilderness area of the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, inhabited by the Manobo tribe. One of northern Mindanao’s finest destinations is off the northeastern coast, the many dazzling islands and beaches around Siargao.

Economy/Resources

The economy in Northern Mindanao is mainly agricultural. But there is also a booming growth of industries particularly in Cagayan de Oro City and in Iligan. The famous Del Monte Plantation is located in Bukidnon and its plant is located in Cagayan De Oro City. The Agus-IV to VII Hydroelectric Plants in Iligan City and Baloi, Lanao del Norte supplies most of its electrical power in Mindanao.

Culture

The majority of the region’s inhabitants are migrants from Cebu and Iloilo. There are also Waray-warays, Tagalogs and Maranaos.

Climate

Rainfall in Northern Mindanao is evenly distributed throughout the year. Its abundant vegetation, natural springs and high elevation contribute to the region’s cool, mild and invigorating climate.
