Surfing

The Philippines offers surf for all levels.

La Union on the northwest coast of Luzon, four hours north of Manila, is easy to get to, has good accommodation and food, and offers gentle beach breaks perfect for beginners.

Baler and Infanta in Quezon, and Daet in Camarines Norte offer a more adventurous experience, with longer travel and bigger waves.

For surfers seeking the extreme edge, the wild east coast is the place to be.

Siargao Island is reputed as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines.

It hosts international surfing events yearly.

Its waves combine the best quality features of the top-rated waves of Hawaii’s fabled “pipeline” and the top-billed waves of Indonesia.

Its huge, powerful rollers have been ranked among the top five breaks in the world, including the “Cloud Nine” which is considered one of the world’s top surfing waves.

After discovering Siargao in neighboring Surigao del Norte, the surf explorers headed on down the Mindanao coast, and soon discovered high-quality waves around Tandag, in Surigao del Sur, where the coast is only a few kilometers from the depths of the Philippine Trench.

This area has a wide variety of waves in a small area including fast tubes, beach breaks, point breaks, and rivermouth breaks.

Two of the finest of them are Jelly’s Point and Glenda’s.
